Studies on the bioavailability of CAVACURMIN®

A study published in the “Journal of Functional Foods” in 2021 shows that taking the curcumin-cyclodextrin complex CAVACURMIN® is associated with increased metabolic bioavailability of tetrahydrocurcumin. A large part of supplemented curcumin is converted into tetrahydrocurcumin in the body.

Because curcumin is not water-soluble, it is poorly absorbed into the human bloodstream. With the help of gamma-cyclodextrin, its bioavailability can be significantly increased. A study published in the “European Journal of Nutrition” in 2018 already proves that the curcuminoids from the cyclodextrin complex CAVACURMIN® are absorbed by the body around 40 times more efficiently than from a standard curcumin extract (Purpura et al. 2018)1.

A randomized double-blind study has now shown that the metabolic bioavailability of tetrahydrocurcumin after taking CAVACURMIN® is also about 40 times higher than after taking a standard curcumin extract (Hundshammer et al. 2021)2.

Tetrahydrocurcumin is a metabolite of curcumin, to which complementary health-promoting properties are attributed. Metabolic bioavailability relates the in-vivo production of tetrahydrocurcumin to the amount of curcumin ingested. Another result of the long-term study now available: after only four weeks, daily oral intake of CAVACURMIN® (approx. 340 milligrams of curcumin each) leads to a consistently high concentration of curcumin and tetrahydrocurcumin in the blood. This effect is still measurable after twelve weeks. The long-term study also confirmed very good tolerability of CAVACURMIN®.

Curcumin can only be effective in the body if it is actually absorbed. Many conventional products contain high amounts, but only a small portion reaches the bloodstream. High bioavailability ensures that the active ingredient reaches where it is needed.

Yes, the contained CAVACURMIN® is based on curcumin from the turmeric plant (Curcuma longa) and uses cyclodextrins, which are also obtained from natural plant starch. The technology improves absorption without using synthetic additives.

By using organic Demeter alcohol, artificial preservatives and solvents can be avoided. The alcohol used comes from biodynamic Demeter agriculture and meets the highest quality standards. It serves as a natural carrier and supports the stability and even distribution of the ingredients.

However, the amount of alcohol contained is extremely small and significantly lower than what is absorbed in everyday life, for example, through ripe fruits or fruit juices. It has no intoxicating effect and is harmless to health. It is used exclusively for functional reasons and in a minimal dosage, which supports the product's high quality and purity standards.

Piperine is used in many curcumin products to increase the absorption of curcumin. However, it can irritate the stomach lining and also affect the absorption of other substances and medications, which can lead to unwanted interactions.

CAVACURMIN® does not require piperine, as its bioavailability is already specifically and efficiently improved by cyclodextrin technology. This enables better tolerability and controlled absorption.

The German Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (BfR) points out that the combination of curcumin with piperine should be viewed critically.
